It's worth it

Grrrreeeetings, I often get asked what the point of going to study music is, what the benefits are and what you learn there that you couldn't learn on your own. Whilst I acknowledge that you certainly can learn a lot on your own as a self taught artist, there is a wealth of knowledge that people who have been studying for a long time and teaching are able to impart on you. So here are 6 things I learnt at music college. What do you think? Did you go to music college? Is it something you would consider? What Do I Do With All These Scales - The Dorian Scale

Get my FREE Guitar Quick-Start Series! ►http://bit.ly/guitar-starter-kit Get the scales diagrams from this video! ►http://bit.ly/dorian-scale Get the jam tracks from this video! ►http://bit.ly/dorian-jam-track (A-minor Dorian) What good is knowing a whole bunch of scales on your guitar if you don’t know how to really use them? In this video, I’m going to go over the Dorian scale (or mode). I’m going to teach you about the Dorian mode as a simple scale shape, and break down the fear and/or hesitancy you may have in learning these types of scales. I also want to show you some examples of how to use it when improvising along with songs. To break it down as simple as possible, the Dorian mode is taking a major scale and moving the tonal center to the second note of the scale. For example, to play the Dorian mode of the G major scale, you would start on the A note -- the second note in the G major scale -- and play the remaining notes in the G major scale, but you’d resolve your scale on the higher octave of A. G major: G - A - B - C - D - E - F# - G (octave) A Dorian: A - B - C - D - E - F# - G - A (octave) After watching the lesson above, you’ll know how to turn the Dorian mode & scale into something useful and musical, and how to improvise with it over popular songs like Moondance and Evil Ways. ***Don’t forget to hit the ‘subscribe’ button & ‘notification bell’ so you can watch the next video as soon as it’s released!*** What’s your favorite mode to improvise with? Developing your musical ear makes learning your favorite songs SO much easier. In this series, Nate Savage & Chelsea Amber are going to go through the essential steps to help you figure out songs by ear. The 8 steps are: #1 - Active Listening #2 - Matching Pitch #3 - Identifying Root Notes #4 - Deciphering Major & Minor Chords #5 - Song Form #6 - Identifying Chord Progression #7 - Finding the Key #8 - Practicing This lesson covers the first step: active listening. By the end of the video, you’ll know what active listening is, and how simple it is to put to practice. The better you get at active listening, the easier you’ll find learning your favorite songs! Keep in mind: some have been gifted a more developed musical ear, so this will come more naturally to them, while others may need to work a little harder at developing it. Either way, it’s something that anyone who has the ability to hear can do! And, like everything, it takes practice. ***Don’t forget to hit the ‘subscribe’ button & ‘notification bell’ so you can watch the next video as soon as it’s released!*** What’s your favorite way to learn new songs?

Minor Pentatonic Magic (Ayla Tesler-Mabe)

Get my FREE Guitar Quick-Start Series! ►http://bit.ly/guitar-starter-kit Get the Chord charts & Scale diagrams for this lesson! ►http://bit.ly/2KenDTi Ayla Tesler-Mabe is back, and in this video lesson she breaks down her approach to guitar solos and improvisation, and it all boils down to the minor pentatonic scale. And for good reason -- many guitarists have made entire careers out of the minor pentatonic scale. But for a scale that only consists of five notes (‘penta’ meaning five, ‘tonic’ = tone), how can you make the most of it? You add in a little *magic*. By the end of this lesson, you’ll know the standard pentatonic scale “box”, and how to break out of it by moving up the fretboard. Ayla also demonstrates you how to throw in a little minor pentatonic *magic* by infusing a few additional notes like major thirds & sharp fourths, among others. The lesson is a great launching point to begin exploring the endless possibilities for improvising on the guitar. And remember to grab the scale diagrams for this lesson here: http://bit.ly/2KenDTi ***Don’t forget to hit the ‘subscribe’ button & ‘notification bell’ so you can watch the next video as soon as it’s released!*** What’s your favorite scale shape to improvise with? Breaking the Blues Scale (Blues Solo Guitar Lesson #5)

Get my FREE Blues Guitar Quick-Start Series! ►http://bit.ly/35P9ZiW Get the chord charts & scale diagrams for this lesson! ►http://bit.ly/2p2Mmms Get a Blues Jam Track for this lesson! ►http://bit.ly/2JX0kx9 In today’s Blues Guitar Solo lesson, I’m going to show you how to “break” the blues scale by using only a few notes. This is the fifth and final lesson in this five-part Blues Solo Guitar Lesson series , so if you want to catch up, you can check out the last four lessons below. Lesson #1 - 12 Bar Blues: http://bit.ly/2BhKjxh Lesson #2 - The KEY To Creating Great Blues Solos: http://bit.ly/2pb4OJB Lesson #3 - Major Pentatonic Scale: The Flavor Injector: http://bit.ly/31O7udz Lesson #4 - One Quick Trick to Play Over Chord Changes: http://bit.ly/2oTkAsu So how do you “break” the blues scale? You’re not actually “breaking” it, but by playing the root notes and the lowered thirds of the chord you’re playing over in the 12 bars, you’re playing notes that aren’t "in" the blues scale. If that doesn’t make a lot of sense, the video will explain it a lot better. Just like with Lesson #4, this technique really helps emphasize the chord changes and will give you another element in your blues solos that you know will sound good. ***Don’t forget to hit the ‘subscribe’ button & ‘notification bell’ so you can watch the next video as soon as it’s released!*** Remember to grab the chord and scale diagrams for this lesson here: And grab a Blues Jam Track (A Major) here: ***Don’t forget to hit the ‘subscribe’ button & ‘notification bell’ so you can watch the next video as soon as it’s released!*** And be sure to download the Blues Jam Track here: http://bit.ly/2JX0kx9 And the chords and scale chart here: http://bit.ly/2p2Mmms

Easy Way To Strum Guitar Chords While Playing Melody

Get the Tab for this song! ►https://bit.ly/2nE156f Get my FREE Beginner Guitar Starter Kit! ►https://goo.gl/Ts2uU6 I got an email from a student with a seemingly simple question: “how do I strum some simple chords and play a melody at the same time?”. Unfortunately, this is a skill that takes some time and dedication to figure out, but this is how you would do it! Step 1 - Learn the basic chord progression with a simple strumming part. Step 2 - Pick out and learn how to play melody on its own. Step 3 - Experiment with different chord shapes and or keys, using capo if necessary, to accommodate playing through the chords while keeping the melody on top. So you have a practical example, I’ll show you how to play the classic hymn “What a friend we have in Jesus” in the key of A. Then I’ll show you how I figure out how to play the song’s rhythm and melody together in a key I have never played the song in before. It’s a lot to take in, but with dedicated practice time, I know you will be able to do it! What song would you most like to be able to play in this style?
