Play the Blues like Steely Dan | Ayla Tesler-Mabe

Start your guitar journey today: ►https://ift.tt/39yNwcp PDF Scale chart: ►https://ift.tt/3ctTkY1 0:00 - Intro Ayla Tesler-Mabe goes into depth on the specific harmonic and chord choices in four different Steely Dan songs. 1:47 - "Peg" This song is the closest Steely Dan came to writing a song with a traditional 1-4-5 blues progression — but with a bit of a twist with their interesting chord choices. 2:37 - 1-4-5 chord progression Since the song is in the key of C, this means it starts with the 1-chord (C), then goes to the 4-chord (F), and finally to the 5-chord (G). 3:25 - Cmaj7 The first chord in the song, Ayla describes how to play this classic major 7 chord. 4:18 - Gadd9/B Next, we go to this chord. And even though the major 3rd of the root is what's being played, the root note is G, making this chord a Gadd9/B chord. 5:41 - Fmaj7 Next, we move to the 4-chord. It's the same chord movement, but this time starting at the 8th fret, and it comes back down to the 1-chord. 6:19 - "Black Friday" This song is the opening song from Steely Dan’s album, “Katy Lied.” It begins with a bluesy riff that continues throughout the verses and transitions into the chorus, where it gets a little crazy. 7:39 - Beginning riff The common note is E, and the voice leading helps tie all these chords together and makes everything connect smoothly. 8:45 - A A classic A major bar chord, but the only caveat is avoiding the high E string. 10:03 - G6 Take the previous shape and move it down a whole step to G and add your pinky to the 5th fret of the B string. This is the voice leading commonality between the chords. 10:22 - F #7 This chord involves putting the dominant 7 at the top of the chord to give it a crunchier tone. 11:31 - E Flat m7 This is a very classic minor 7 chord shape you may have encountered before. 12:00 - A/D A major triad with the D in the bass. What’s also interesting about this chord, is that it’s also a D major 9 chord. So it can be referred to as either. 13:28 - B9sus4 This chord is an A triad over B -- it acts as the 5-chord bringing us back to the 1-chord. 14:51 - "Black Cow" Another opening track but off of Steely Dan's album "Asia" (it might be one of Ayla’s favorites…even though it’s hard for her to choose — they’re all great!) 15:52 - The Blues Motif You might instantly think of old school blues when hearing this motif. It's just a diad (two notes) and moving that shape from the 8th fret to the 10th fret. 17:34 - A7(#5) The sharp 5 in this chord helps build a lot of tension to resolve to the next chord. 18:42 - C/D This chord has the C major triad in it over the D chord. You can also think of it as a D9sus4 chord (Ayla taught on this earlier in the lesson). 19:46 - E7(#9) This is a great altered chord often used in jazz-influenced music. It's also a staple in Jimi Hendrix’s playing. 22:17 - E9sus4 The chord used to resolve back to the A major chord. 23:07 - "Bodhisattva" This song comes off of one of her favorite steely Dan albums, and one of the first Steely Dan songs she ever heard...courtesy of Rock Band 2. 23:51 - Beginning riff The song starts with a traditional rock blues riff that may sound familiar. 25:00 - G7 This next riff is just the G going to the 10th fret of A string. This is a classic voicing of a dominat7 chord. 26:21 - E Flat m7 The same chord voicing we looked at earlier in the video 26:30 - A7(#5) Again, the exact same chord that we learned in"Black Cow." 26:42 - Dm7 They play a very typical voicing of this type of chord, letting it resolve the previous chords. 27:13 - F6 This is also the same chord voicing used earlier in the song, but the root being F this time. This chord progression is used a lot and can be considered a type of modal interchange. 7 Ways To Make Boring Guitar Scales Sound Exotic

Start your guitar journey today: ►https://ift.tt/39yNwcp PDF Scale chart: ►https://ift.tt/3bOFDTb 0:00 - Intro Take a regular minor pentatonic scale and make it exotic by adding flavors from other cultures and different types of music. 1:35 - Minor Pentatonic Scale The classic minor pentatonic scale is found in all genres of music but has so much room to add different notes to make it sound more interesting. 3:02 - A Blues Scale The first thing you can do to make the scale more interesting is to add a sharp 4 interval away from the root (the starting note). This simple flavor turns it into a blues scale. 4:45 - A Dorian Scale A Dorian is a more concise way of playing a minor pentatonic scale. You simply add in two more notes to give it more flair. This scale is found in a lot of jazz music. 7:43 - A Romanian/Ukrainian Minor Scale Take the Dorian scale, alter it a little, and turn it into a Dorian sharp 4 scale, a.k.a Romanian/Ukrainian scale. All you do is add a sharp 4 -- probably how it got its name! 9:50 - A Natural Harmonic Minor Scale This minor scale is made special by having a major 7 note within it. You'll hear this scale in a lot of jazz and classical music. 11:48 - A Hungarian Minor Scale If you take the harmonic minor scale and sharpen the 4th, you will get the Hungarian scale. It’s made its way into the mainstream as it is used in Billie Eilish’s "Bad Guy." 14:35 A Hirajõshi Scale This scale consists of the 2nd flat third over a minor type chord as well as the 5th flat 6 root. This scale derives from classical Japanese music. 15:49 - A Raga Asavari Scale The last scale is very similar to the previous one but has a flat 2nd and a 4th and 5th flat 6 root note that differentiates it. It voids the third altogether, meaning you can use it over a minor or major chord. How to Play Guitar Like Prince | Funk Essentials

Start your guitar journey today: ►www.Guitareo.com/guitar-quest/ PDF chord charts ►https://ift.tt/3s3oTgu 0:00 - Intro Ayla Tesler-Mabe discusses what makes Prince's guitar playing so incredible and the funk essentials of his popular songs. 0:29 - "Kiss" Ayla is joined by her band Ludic to perform "Kiss," a quintessential funk song from Prince. 1:45 - E Dominant 9 In the into of the song, there are two guitars where the first one is playing the classic E dominant 9 chord. 2:10 - E13 sus4 The second guitar in the intro is playing an E13 sus 4 chord with heavy wah pedal usage. 2:44 - Chicken scratch strumming This technique is found in a lot of funk music and derived from some of James Brown's guitar players. 3:16 - Solo Most notable with using the wah pedal, the solo Prince plays is all in minor pentatonic. 3:35 - Bends The "sassy little bends" are short and fast, and they appear in MANY Prince songs. 4:18 - Chorus The chorus of the song is the dominant 9 chord shape moved chromatically. 4:32 - "1999" Ludic jam together to play the second song on the list, Prince's party hit "1999." 5:53 - F Dominant 7 This main guitar part plays at the beginning and continues through the entirety of the song. 6:07 - F7sus4 The F Dominant 7 chord changes to the F7sus4 chord by moving the pinky to the 11th fret and barring the B and E string. 6:21 - Strumming Ayla demonstrates the strumming pattern that adds to the funkiness of the song. 6:38 - Chorus guitar #1 This is a syncopated guitar part that outlines the roots of the chords but on the off beats. 7:29 - Minor Pentatonic The funky lick Prince does in the song is right out of the minor pentatonic scale. 9:16 -Chorus guitar #2 The other guitar in the chorus follows the bass on the 1-2-3-4 while the wah pedal goes while you play the chord. 10:11 - "I Wanna Be Your Lover" The final Prince song performance. This song was off of one of the earliest Prince albums and was a huge hit at the time. 11:15 - Intro guitar #1 The first guitar part in the intro is harmonizing with the bass. 13:42 - Intro guitar #2 The other guitar part (the more iconic part) is all very staccato. Ayla demonstrates how to achieve this technique and what notes to play. 14:55 - Pre-chorus More funky staccato that goes into two more guitar parts. One is mirroring the bass, and the other is paying what the keyboard plays.
